An Icelandic energy consortium composed of three Icelandic energy companies (Hitaveita Sudurnesja, Landsvirkjun and Orkuveita Reykjavíkur) was established in the year 2000. The consortium is working on a scientific study into harnessing supercritical geothermal fluid.

We are currently carrying out research and other preparatory work relating to new geothermal power plants in the geothermal areas at Theistareykir and Gjástykki in Thingeyjarsýsla, and at Krafla and Bjarnarflag, where we have our current geothermal installations. A regional plan pertaining to this initiative was approved in January 2008.

The Kárahnjúkar Power Plant

The installed capacity of the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant (HPP) is 690 MW, and its power-generating capacity is 4,600 GWh/year. This single installation harnesses the potential of the Rivers Jökulsá á Dal and Jökulsá í Fljótsdal and tributaries in the Hraun area to the east.
