Vatnsfell Hydroelectric Station
Vatnsfell hydropower station will utilize the head in a diversion canal between Lake Thórisvatn and the Krókslón reservoirs.
Three dams will be built. The main dam is of a concrete face rockfill type (CFRD) and will cover present canal course, and two smaller saddle dams. A bottom outlet is located under the main dam and a spillway of a special design is situated on top and downstream face of the dam.
The dams will create a small reservoir. A headrace canal will be excavated at the southern end of the main dam, leading to a intake structure. From there water will be fed into two steel penstocks to the powerhouse, The powerhouse will be above ground, but sunk into the foot of the mountainside. The two generating units will be connected by cables to a high voltage substation which is located close to the powerhouse. The substation has one outgoing transmission line to Sigalda Hydro Power Station.
A tailrace canal will be excavated from the powerhouse to the Krókslón reservoir. Environmental impact of the station will be minimal, largely confined to quarrying and the reservoir.
